With Scott Satterfield off to Cincinnati, the Louisville Cardinals are looking for a new head coach for the first time since late 2018. Satterfield took over in the wake of the tumultuous and poor finale to the Bobby Petrino era and has taken the Cardinals to a bowl game every year except the covid-altered 2019 season.
Here are five coaches who Louisville may call on to replace him. Louisville has a history of hiring men with head coaching experience and I expect them to continue that this year. All five of these candidates fit that bill.
Jeff Brohm, Purdue
The Louisville native and alumni should be the first call in this search. Having just led the Boilers to a Big 10 title game appearance, Brohm appears firmly in play here. Brohm is 36-34 in 6 years in charge of Purdue, which includes 4 bowl appearances, Brohm has led some explosive offenses and had a number of high NFL draft picks. Rumor is he turned this job down when Satterfield got it last time, second time’s a charm for Louisville?

Charles Huff, Marshall
Huff may be in the mix for a few P5 jobs. He has Marshall playing a tough brand of football and grinding out yards on the ground with ease. The former Nick Saban assistant finished his 2nd regular season with the Herd and earned a trip to the Myrtle Beach Bowl. Huff is building a solid roster, utilizing the portal, and has Marshall trending upwards.

Clay Helton, Georgia Southern
The former USC coach had a remarkable year 1 for the Eagles. Taking over a triple-option roster and earning a Camellia Bowl bid was seriously impressive, especially with people like me doubting the hire. Helton had more downs than ups when leading the Trojans but he did have two double-digit win seasons. The offensive-minded Helton may want to stay at Georgia Southern longer, but who knows?

Tyson Helton, Western Kentucky
No, this isn’t a typo or a mistake. Yes, I think both Helton’s could be in the running here. Tyson just finished his fourth regular season leading the Hilltoppers where he has a 31-21 career record and a bowl appearance every season. He has mentored some high-flying offenses led by QB’s Bailey Zappe and Austin Reed. His work with QB’s could be his ticket to a P5 job.

Kane Wommack, South Alabama
The 35-year-old Wommack has only been in charge of the Jaguars for 2 years but is already getting mentioned for P5 jobs. The former Indiana DC has South Alabama playing tough D and scoring points. A New Orleans Bowl appearance off of a 10-2 season is in store this year for Wommack. Wommack won’t have to wait long for a P5 head coaching, this might not be it but he’s a star on the rise.
