Miami’s new staff is dominating year one on the recruiting trail

Since 2012 the University of Miami (FL) has only finished with a top 10 recruiting class twice. In 2012 they finished with the 10th-rated class, and a little more recently, in 2018, they finished with the 8th-rated class in the country.

Head coach Mario Cristobal in his first year at the helm in Coral Gables currently has the 11th-rated class in the 2023 recruiting cycle and has an excellent chance to finish even higher, all according to the 247 Sports Rankings. His current class is made up of six three-star prospects, seven four-star prospects, and one five-star prospect.

Current Commitments

  • Three-star offensive tackle Frankie Tinilau is 6’5 315lbs (103rd-rated OT.)
  • Three-star quarterback Emory Williams 6’4 190 lbs (35th-rated QB.)
  • Three-star linebacker Bobby Washington 6’3 215 lbs (48th-rated LB.)
  • Three-star tight end Reid Mikeska 6’5 233 lbs (29th-rated TE.)
  • Three-star tight end Jackson Carver 6’6 220 lbs (25th-rated TE.)
  • Three-star interior offensive lineman Antonio Tripp is 6’3 300 lbs (27th-rated IOL.)
  • Four-star athlete Robby Washington is 5’10, 185 lbs (13th-rated ATH.)
  • Four-star linebacker Raul Aguirre is 6’2 220 lbs (9th-rated LB.)
  • Four-star athlete Robert Stafford 5’11 171 lbs (12th-rated ATH.)
  • Four-star wide receiver Nathaniel Joseph is 5’8, 170 lbs (16th-rated WR.)
  • Four-star tight end Riley Williams, 6’6 230 lbs (2nd-rated TE.)
  • Four-star quarterback Jaden Rashada 6’4 185 lbs (7th-rated QB.)
  • Four-star edge Jayden Wayne is 6’5 245 lbs (6th-rated Edge.)
  • Five-star offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa 6’5 330 lbs (first-rated OT.)

Mauigoa is also a top 10 player in this class (9th), according to the 247 Sports Composite Rankings.

The Standouts

The three prospects from Cristobal’s inaugural class that caught my eye are Jaden Rashada, Francis Mauigoa, and Riley Williams. All three were enormous commitments for the Hurricanes; Rashada kicked it off when he pledged his commitment to Miami on June 26th. Shortly after, Riley Williams committed on July first, and Francis Mauigoa committed on the Fourth of July. I project all three of these prospects can be starters or see significant time on the playing field during their freshmen seasons.

Recruiting targets to watch

The Hurricanes aren’t finished recruiting this cycle either; they have received crystal balls that favor them landing the following players. If Coach Cristobal and the Miami coaching staff can close on the following targets, they will have a legitimate shot at finishing with a top-five recruiting class.

  • Four-star safety Jayden Bonsu 6’2 205 lbs (22nd-rated S)
  • Three-star offensive tackle Tommy Kinsler 6’6 330 lbs (79th-rated OT)
  • Four-star offensive tackle Samson Okunlola 6’5 305 lbs (3rd-rated OT)
  • Four-star linebacker Malik Bryant 6’2 235 lbs (4th-rated LB)
  • Four-star defensive lineman Rueben Bain, 6’2 250 (19th-rated DL)
