Fact or Fiction: USC in the CFP Arch Manning’s Status with Alabama, and an SEC-Only Playoff

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image source=”featured_image” img_size=”large”][vc_column_text]In today’s Fact or Fiction I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

USC making a playoff run would be good for college football

Farrell’s take: FACT

Utah is a better football program right now. Oregon has a better team. But Lincoln Riley and USC making a run at the playoff this season would be immense for college football. Why? The Pac-12 has become an afterthought and pretty much eliminated from playoff contention by mid season recently. And a run by Utah and Oregon would be fun and all but it wouldn’t spark interest in the conference like USC returning to the Pete Carroll days. For west coast football to survive, USC needs to be good.

Alabama is out for Arch Manning with Eli Holstein on board

Farrell’s take: FICTION

He’s still visiting Alabama as far as I know. And Nick Saban is still the coach. So Alabama isn’t out for Manning but taking Holstein is a good sign that they aren’t confident. And UGA has made a strong run here in recent months. Let’s see how shrewd Saban can be. Maybe he hosts Manning, gives it his best shot but props up Steve Sarkisian and Texas in doing so. That would be classic evil genius work.

The SEC-Only playoff is the wave of the future

Farrell’s take: FICTION

We don’t know what the future holds because what we see in college football now is not even a reasonable facsimile of what it will be in 5-10 years. Superteams, super conferences, around 30 teams thriving, and another 30 current Power Five programs struggling? Who knows. But we are heading for re-alignment again, and with NIL and the transfer portal, we have no idea what’s next. I know the SEC – if it remains the SEC – will thrive as will the Big Ten. But beyond that? No idea.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
