WR LV Bunkley-Shelton has transferred to Oklahoma from Arizona State.  This was a much needed get for the Sooners who lost Jadon Haselwood, Mario Williams and Cody Jackson to the transfer portal. All of whom are top notch talent that most upper-echelon teams coveted coming out of high school.  LV Bunkley-Shelton is listed as 6’0, 180 lbs, so he is more of a replacement (at least body-wise) to Mario Williams or Cody Jackson. The transfer portal is giveth, and taketh away. but for elite programs like Oklahoma it mostly giveth. The Sooners have lost quality players to the portal, but immediately have been able to replace them with other former blue chip prospects.

At Arizona State, Bunkley-Shelton played both seasons since arriving on campus. He was 4-star prospect coming out of Junipero Serra High school in Gardena, CA.  In 4 games in the Covid-19 shortened 2020 season, he caught 11 passes for 100 yards. In his redshirt freshman campaign last year, he showed dramatic improvement, finishing with 33 catches for 418 yards and two touchdowns. As a whole, Arizona State was not productive in the passing game with the limitations of Sun Devils QB Jayden Daniels, who transferred to LSU. So from a production stand point given his circumstances it was a pretty productive year for Bunkley-Shelton who knew he needed to go elsewhere to pursue his NFL dream.

Dillon Gabriel is several pegs above as a passer compared to Daniels. During Bunkley-Shelton’s first TD reception you can see the poor location of the ball but he manages to catch it avoid the tackle and score regardless.

LV Bunkley-Shelton is a nice addition to Oklahoma’s WR room. However, in terms of startin,g that doesn’t appear to be in the cards, at least on paper. OU has Marvin Mims, Theo Wease, and Jahlil Farooq on their roster, and at least right now, those guys are slated to start. In addition, Drake Stoops has been a reliable pass catcher during his time in Norman. Mizzou transfer JJ Hester brings a different dynamic from body type that would  give him a playing time edge. He will be given every opportunity to get onto the field. Because he can fit a similar role to what Jaylon Robinson did for Dillon Gabriel when he was at UCF.

At the end of the day, Oklahoma re-tools they don’t rebuild. You cant crush these upper tier program rosters anymore the transfer portal is like a scholarship count extension, and the Sooners have taken full advantage after picking up the pieces with Lincoln Riley heading to USC.
