The Basics

2023 QB JJ Kohl is a 6’6″, 227-pound quarterback from Ankeny, Iowa. According to the 247 composite rankings, he is a 4-star QB, the 17th ranked QB and 324th player overall. Kohl is the 3rd highest-ranked player in Iowa. He plays for Ankeny High School where he led his team to the state championship game as a junior last season.

He holds many offers, including from schools like  Florida State, Iowa, Penn State, Nebraska, and Pitt. Kohl decided to stay close to home committing to the Iowa State Cyclones.

Roster outlook for 2023-24

The projected top of the depth chart in 2023-24 will likely be between the class of 2020 QBs Hunter Dekkers and Aidan Bouman. Other Quarterbacks on the roster include Ashton Cook and Hayes Gibson.

Opportunity for Playing Time

Coming in, I would project Kohl to start out solidly in the middle of the QB depth chart. I would expect Dekkers and Bouman to be above him and Cook and Hayes to be below. There is a chance however that one of Dekkers and Bouman could transfer before then depending on who wins the starting job. If he can get on campus in the spring he could push for immediate playing time. He should be able to get the ISU playbook down quickly, as he is a smart young man. The competition ahead of him is stiff, however with his talent he could make a push, or could come off the bench as Purdy did in 2018 if Iowa State starts slowly. However, if Iowa State has a strong start to the season then you would expect the incumbent to remain unseated.

Matt Campbell has shown with Brock Purdy, he isn’t afraid to start underclassmen QBs if the spot is earned. You should expect JJ Kohl to be starting by his junior year and perhaps earlier. With his size, arm strength, and  accuracy. He is expected compete for reps early in his career. Kohl being an Iowa kid, will be a fan favorite among Cyclone fans.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
