2023 Emerging Stars: SEC

In this article, Luke Brumm discusses who could emerge as a star in the SEC in 2023.

Every season we see new stars emerge, especially since players only stay an average of about four seasons in college football. We’re going to take a look at a few players in each conference that could be those guys this year, and last but not least is the SEC.

Dallas Turner – Alabama EDGE

Turner is who Alabama is hoping will become the next Will Anderson. He has played alongside Anderson for a couple of years now and is hoping to take that next step to become the scary Alabama EDGE that they seem to always have.

Turner accumulated sixteen solo tackles and four sacks in 2022, and I expect those numbers to at least double in 2023. This Crimson Tide defense looked shaky at times last season, so Turner stepping up with new defensive coordinator Kevin Steele will be a huge factor in determining whether that defense can get back to the high Bama standard.

Nov 12, 2022; Oxford, Mississippi, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide linebacker Chris Braswell (41) and linebacker Dallas Turner (15) and linebacker Henry To’o To’o (10) celebrate after making a stop against the Ole Miss Rebels at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Alabama won 30-24.

Carson Beck – Georgia QB

I am super excited to see Carson Beck finally get his chance. A lot of people thought last year would be his shot until Stetson Bennett decided to come back for another year. Meanwhile, Beck has waited patiently and has put in the work. He also didn’t hit the transfer portal when things got hard.

I have a lot of respect for him, but his on-the-field stuff is what really excites me. He is a gunslinger who can throw the ball all around the field. He has game experience too since Georgia blew out a lot of teams and Beck entered in for mop-up duty. I think there is a chance that Beck can become one of the top NFL draft QBs by the end of the season if all goes according to plan.

Georgia quarterback Carson Beck (15) throws the ball during the UGA G-Day spring football game at Sanford Stadium in Athens on Saturday, April 15, 2023.

Evan Stewart – Texas A&M WR

Evan Stewart was one of my favorite freshmen to watch last season. Apart of the historic recruiting class A&M put together in 2022, Stewart was one of the best players on the roster.

He had at least three catches in every game last year, had two games over 100 yards, and four games with over eighty yards. In total, Stewart racked up fifty-three receptions for 649 yards total and added two touchdowns.

I see him getting close to 100 receptions, over 1,000 yards, and at least eight touchdowns in 2023. I am very high on this kid and I can’t wait to see if he proves me right.

Oct 8, 2022; Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA; Texas A&M Aggies wide receiver Evan Stewart (1) carries the ball against the Alabama Crimson Tide during the first half at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
