By Skeeter Smith
The wait is over. Week 1 of the college football season is finally here, and the spotlight is on the fresh faces looking to make a name for themselves. Here are five freshmen who could make an immediate impact for their teams.
Jeremiah Smith, WR, Ohio State
From the moment Jeremiah Smith set foot on Ohio State’s campus this spring, the hype surrounding him has only intensified. The former No. 1 high school player in the country wasted no time making his mark, shedding his black stripe after just four practices, the fastest in program history. At 6’3 215 pounds, Smith has the tools to become a superstar. He’s a polished route-runner with the speed to separate, the leaping ability to high-point the ball, and the ability to run after the catch. With Ohio State facing Akron at home, expect Smith to see a lot of action in his debut.

Dylan Raiola, QB, Nebraska
The Nebraska Cornhuskers put the college football world on notice when they were able to flip 5 star quarterback Dylan Raiola away from the Georgia Bulldogs. Since then, the hype around the program has only grown. After impressing in the spring game and following it up with a strong fall camp, Raiola was officially named QB1 for the Cornhuskers. Nebraska’s offense was hampered by poor quarterback play last season, so they’re counting on Raiola to provide the spark they desperately need from that position.

Cam Coleman, WR, Auburn
Landing Cam Coleman was a major victory for Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers. The second-highest-ranked receiver in his class, Coleman brings a level of talent Auburn hasn’t seen at the position in years. With blazing speed and elite athleticism, Coleman is the kind of player who will give defensive coordinators headaches as he makes spectacular plays look routine. Auburn’s offense was pedestrian at best last season, so the fanbase is hoping to see a lot of Coleman on Saturday to bring some excitement to this offense.

Micah Hudson, WR, Texas Tech
Micah Hudson arrives at Texas Tech as the highest-rated recruit in school history, and there’s plenty of excitement surrounding him. Hudson is a big play waiting to happen, something the Red Raiders lacked at times last season. His speed and elusiveness make him a threat to take the top off defenses and score whenever the ball is in his hands. Texas Tech opens the season against Abilene Christian so Hudson should have plenty of opportunity to showcase his skill on Saturday.

Jordan Seaton, OL, Colorado
Jordan Seaton shocked the college football world last year when he committed to Colorado on national TV. This was a crucial pickup for Deion Sanders and his staff, especially considering Shedeur Sanders was the most sacked quarterback in 2023. Seaton possesses the size, athleticism, and physicality you want in a franchise left tackle. Although Colorado faces an FCS opponent in North Dakota State, this game is far from a layup, as the Bison have been one of the top FCS programs over the past 15 years. This will be a solid test for Seaton in his college debut.
