A Rivalry Renewed: One Good Thing About Realignment

The 2024 college football season is going to be a wild ride.

While there are some things to dislike about conference realignment, there are also exciting components to it. One of them is the renewed matchups between big-brand schools, including a rivalry between two historic Texas programs.

The Beginning

The date was October 19, 1894. It marked the beginning of a legendary rivalry as Texas triumphed over Texas A&M with a score of 38-0, winning the first-ever matchup between the schools. This was the birth of a rivalry that would span over a century, with the teams playing each other intermittently until 1911. Then, in 1915, it became a yearly tradition, a testament to the deep-rooted history and significance of this rivalry.

The Texas-Texas A&M rivalry, known as the Lone Star Showdown, is a longstanding college football rivalry. The teams first played each other in 1894 and have played 118 times, with Texas leading the all-time series 76-37-5.

The rivalry was initially part of the Southwest Conference, of which both teams were founding members. When the conference disbanded in 1996, the two teams were among a group of SWC teams to join the Big 8, which was rebranded as the Big 12. This move marked a significant shift in the college football landscape. Now, with the renewal of the rivalry in the SEC, another chapter in its history is about to unfold as Texas makes its debut in the Southeastern Conference.

The Rivalry Will Be Renewed in the SEC

The anticipation is palpable. The Texas A&M vs. Texas rivalry, one of the biggest in college football, is set to resume in November 2024 at Texas A&M’s Kyle Field. This will be the first meeting between the two teams since 2011, when the Aggies left the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference. The excitement is building, and fans are eagerly awaiting this clash of the titans.

Thanksgiving History

The game will be played on Thanksgiving weekend, a nod to the rivalry’s historical spot in the schedule. The renewal of the rivalry has fans and coaches on both sides excited, with Texas Athletic Director Chris Del Conte stating that the return of the rivalry is ‘what’s best’ for the University of Texas. Out of the last 118 games, seventy-two have been played on Thanksgiving.

The last game was on November 24, 2011. The final score was Texas 27, Texas A&M 25. One thing is for sure: there are a lot of big-time regular-season college football games on the schedule in 2024. It will be exciting to see how things shake out, especially with this being the first year of the expanded College Football Playoff.
