With plenty of coaching changes happening, there is a constant flow of rumors regarding replacements. But sometimes a coaching change doesn’t officially even have to happen for there to be replacement rumors. That is the situation at Ohio State, where Urban Meyer has been discussed all week since the Buckeyes’ loss to Michigan. Yesterday, he discussed his future.
Urban Meyer is a legend in Columbus. In seven seasons he led the Buckeyes to an 83-9 record. It is not as though Ohio State has collapsed since his departure at the conclusion of the 2018 season, but the feeling around the program doesn’t seem to be the same. That is especially true due to the annual losses to Michigan.
Because of this, Ryan Day is on a hot seat, despite a 66-10 record in his time in Columbus. His overall record isn’t the issue though, but his 1-4 record against the Wolverines is. And Urban Meyer has obviously heard the noise, and on his weekly podcast, The Triple Option Show, he addressed the rumors about his potential return to Ohio State:

With this statement, many hearts in the Buckeye State have been broken. You can never say never when it comes to coaching decisions, but Meyer’s statement is pretty definitive. However, I think this is a good thing for the program though.
If Ohio State does well in the upcoming playoffs, most of the Anti-Day noise will simmer down. However, if the Buckeyes lose a first-round game, especially at home, prepare for the volume to hit a painfully high level. But if that does happen, and the decision is made to move on from Coach Day because everything has become too toxic, at least the program and fans know that their legend is not the answer.

Knowing this will save some time and let Ohio State focus on the countless impressive replacements that will sprint to Columbus to try and take over one of the top overall programs in the country.
Curious eyes will be on the Buckeyes in the first round of the playoffs. Will they bounce back or will they collapse? The outcome very well may determine major decisions within the program.
But at least now everyone knows that it won’t include Urban Meyer.
