Today, Deion Sanders and his medical team will hold a press conference.
Sanders was involved in a limited role during offseason camp. Rumors started swirling about his health. During the Big 12 Media Days Sanders said he was there to talk about his team, not his health. He posted on X, “Back and Feeling Great!”
In recent years, Sanders has contended with blood clot problems and had two toes on his left foot amputated.
Challenges in 2025
As Sanders begins his third season as head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, he faces not only health concerns but also the challenge of losing two key players to the NFL: his son, quarterback Shedeur Sanders, and two-way standout Travis Hunter.
Shedeur’s departure creates a major gap at quarterback. The 2024 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year played a central role in the team’s success last season, especially with his ability to run the RPO (run-pass option) system. His skills helped Colorado finish with a solid 9-4 record. Now, Sanders must choose between Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter and freshman Julian “JuJu” Lewis. Both show promise, but neither has experience in Colorado’s system.

Meanwhile, offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur faces pressure to adjust the offense without Shedeur’s accuracy and leadership. The uncertain quarterback situation, combined with questions about the RPO scheme, threatens to disrupt the team’s offensive flow. The Buffaloes also struggled running the ball last season. Improving the running game remains critical to support the new quarterback and keep the offense balanced.
Adding to the challenge, Hunter’s departure deepens Colorado’s concerns. As the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner and a unique two-way star, Hunter contributed heavily on both sides of the ball. He caught 96 passes for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns on offense, while also recording 35 tackles, four interceptions and 11 pass breakups at cornerback. Replacing his impact will prove difficult.
With so many changes ahead, fans will watch closely to see how Coach Prime and the Buffaloes respond. Colorado opens its regular season on at 9 p.m. ET on Aug. 29 against Georgia Tech.
