Every year we hear rumblings of changes throughout college football. Several coaches perform well below expectations, and their seats begin to warm up. Here are five coaches on the hot seat going into 2023.
Neal Brown – West Virginia
Neil Brown has been at West Virginia for four seasons now and has still yet to win more than six games. I’m honestly surprised that the Mountaineers didn’t move on from Brown this season. Regardless, Neil Brown has the hottest seat in football right now, and if he doesn’t win at least eight games in year five, it’s hard for me to believe that West Virginia will keep him.
Jimbo Fisher – Texas A&M
There was a ton of hype around the Aggies over the off-season after they inked the best recruiting class of all time. However, that hype quickly died out after A&M suffered an awful loss to Appalachian State in week two of the regular season. The Aggies would go on to finish the season with a 5-7 record, missing a bowl game. Through five years, Jimbo Fisher has a nearly identical record as previous Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin did. If the Aggies come out and have another season like they just had, Fisher might be forced to find a new job.
Tom Allen – Indiana
Aside from what was nearly a magical run in 2020, Tom Allen has only had one winning season with the Hoosiers. He deserves a bit of slack in that department, as before he was hired, Indiana hadn’t had a winning season since 2007. Still, he did a poor job of capitalizing on his success in 2019 and 2020, and as a result, the Hoosiers are falling back into irrelevancy. They went 2-10 in 2021 and followed that up with a 4-8 campaign in 2022. If Indiana misses a bowl game this year, I don’t expect Tom Allen to have a job there in 2024.

Billy Napier – Florida
Billy Napier is a rare case. I do not think he should be on the hot seat this soon, especially with how well he has been recruiting, but after a 6-7 campaign that was capped off with a 30-3 loss to Oregon State, several people are wondering if Napier was the right hire. He has a chance to put these rumblings to rest if the Gators have a good season in 2023, but if they finish with a losing record once again, I wouldn’t be shocked if Florida rode themselves of Billy Napier.
