The opening round of the College Football Playoffs left much to be desired, lacking the excitement fans had hoped for. Fortunately, the upcoming quarterfonal round looks to possess thrilling games and intriguing matchups. One area I’d like to spotlight is quarterback play and its potential to significantly influence the outcomes of these pivotal games.
It’s ironic—and perhaps telling—that after writing an article about QBR and its correlation to team success, we now see many of those same quarterbacks leading the last remaining teams in the playoffs. It’s a refreshing validation of the data and a testament to the importance of the position. Let’s dive in and examine how each quarterback can make the difference when it matters most.
Keys to the Game
Quinn Ewers, Texas
The key is simple: take care of the ball. Ewers has the ability to make every throw, but he must eliminate bad decisions. Paired with Texas’s strong defense, this approach can carry the Longhorns all the way.
Sam Leavitt, Arizona State
While taking care of the ball is essential, Leavitt also needs to take calculated shots downfield. Big plays will be crucial, as Texas rarely gives them up. He must attack the zone and force the linebackers – who will be more worried about RB Cam Skattebo – into coverage.
Will Howard, Ohio State
Howard needs to avoid mental lapses and stay laser-focused. This is a game where he should have the green light to air it out. Getting the ball into the hands of playmakers, particularly Jeremiah Smith, will be key. The offensive line must protect Howard—this will make or break Ohio State’s season.
Dillon Gabriel, Oregon
Consistency is Gabriel’s strength, and he needs to maintain it. Using his legs more could create opportunities, as Ohio State has likely studied his tendencies. This game is personal for the Ducks, making Gabriel’s execution critical.
More Sports News
Drew Allar, Penn State
Getting the ball to Tyler Warren should be a priority. He’s by far the best weapon for the receiving corps, so otherwise, simple and accurate passes will lead to success. Boise State’s secondary is vulnerable, but Allar must make quick, composed decisions to capitalize.
Maddux Madsen, Boise State
Madsen must string together positive plays to create momentum. He needs to play smart and protect the ball. Check-downs, particularly to Ashton Jeanty out of the backfield, could be a new wrinkle and will be crucial for sustaining drives.
Riley Leonard, Notre Dame
Leonard shouldn’t hesitate to take deep shots when opportunities arise. His mobility will be a weapon, forcing the Georgia defense to adjust. Open running lanes should be exploited, as Leonard’s ability to function like a running back can change the game.
Gunner Stockton, Georgia
Stockton’s mobility needs to be a factor, and establishing a rhythm through simple throws will be vital. Receivers must step up and catch the ball. Stockton just needs to play his game—he’s in this position for a reason and not try to do too much.

Game Predictions:
Texas 35, Arizona State 21
Texas boasts one of the best offenses in college football, led by a head coach in Steve Sarkisian who isn’t afraid to take risks. With multiple offensive weapons who consistently find the end zone and a quarterback capable of delivering the ball, the Longhorns are in a strong position. The Sun Devils’ secondary play will determine how competitive this game remains. Ultimately, Texas’s combination of a solid defense and explosive offense secures them the win.
Ohio State 30, Oregon 33
This rematch is a battle of evenly matched offenses where quarterback play and special teams will decide the outcome. I’m giving the Ducks the edge, thanks to the consistency of Dillon Gabriel and the explosive talent of Tez Johnson. Oregon’s ability to execute in clutch moments gives them the win in a close contest.
Penn State 23, Boise State 26
Despite their talented roster, Penn State has struggled to live up to expectations this season. Drew Allar’s inconsistency has been a major factor. Boise State, on the other hand, has a strong chance to pull off the upset. Ashton Jeanty will help open up the passing game, while LaTrell Caples—a deep-threat receiver—will be a player to watch. The Broncos’ efficiency tips the scales in their favor.
Notre Dame 27, Georgia 17
Georgia’s defense is elite, but they have difficulty containing mobile quarterbacks. The Bulldogs’ struggles against Georgia Tech and Haynes King provide a blueprint for Notre Dame. Riley Leonard’s mobility and leadership will be the deciding factor, as he takes over in the fourth quarter to lead the Fighting Irish to victory.

Final remarks:
I’m looking forward to watching the rest of the playoff games unfold. The new format might not be as bad as some feared—it adds a fresh layer of excitement to the competition. One thing seems certain: the national champion will ultimately feature the most efficient quarterback. While defense may win championships, it’s the offense that closes the deal and seals the game.
