Recently, the trend has been to cancel a spring game. Tampering has been given as a reason
not to have the game. Teams like Nebraska, Ohio State, Texas, USC, Florida State, and others
have canceled their games. Others are having alternative events to cap off the spring practices.
Many schools plan to hold their spring games as planned. Georgia, Clemson, Oregon, and
others will have the traditional games. Deion Sanders has a different idea.
“We got to sell this thing out and pack this thing because the way the trend is
going, you never know if this is going to be the last spring game. I don’t believe in that. I don’t
really want to condone that. I would like to play in the spring. Actually, I (would) like to play
against another team in the spring. That’s what I’m trying to do right now.”
Sanders and the Buffalos want to take it to another level. They actually want to play someone
else. It does make sense for a couple of reasons. Players have been practicing against their
teammates for weeks already. “To have a competitive (game) against your own guys kind of
gets monotonous. You really can’t tell the level of your guys because, you know, it’s the same
old, same way.”

Also, each play has the risk of twice as many of your players getting injured. If you’re playing a
different team, you only have 11 players in the play that could get hurt.
Whether or not the Buffalos find an opponent for this year’s game will be known soon.
Coaches are a paranoid bunch, so it is unlikely that playing a different team will become the
norm in college football.
