Deion Says He Is Not Leaving for Texas A&M Job – But Has He Even Earned Consideration?

Coach Prime is adamant that he is not leaving Boulder for College Station

What is Coach Prime doing being linked to the Texas A&M job?

Do people really think that a coach who has lost five out of his last six games is more worthy than a $76 million loser like Jimbo Fisher to coach the Aggies? Fisher can lose a game just as well as any other coach in college football.

Deion Sanders is no different, my friends.

Stephen A. Smith has said that Deion should be taking his Coach Prime shtick to College Station and be the next head coach of the Aggies and coach a team that plays in the SEC. However, Coach Prime set the record straight during his weekly press conference Tuesday afternoon.

“We forget how blessed we are, and I am extremely blessed. Let’s go and start with the ‘bull junk’ and go and get that out of the way.” I’m talking about how I’m blessed, so I know the Devil is gonna strike.”

Then Prime took the first question, and it was about Stephen A. Smith and him leaving for the A&M post.

“What strikes you about myself that you guys really think I sit down and say, ‘Oh, yes. Stephen A!,” Prime said. “C’mon. I’m good. We got to win. Let’s focus on this week, and we play Friday, so we lose a day of practice. We gotta focus.”

Prime is focusing on the Washington State team that he has to beat on Friday to have any hope of securing a bowl bid. Colorado must also beat Utah in the finale to reach their sixth win.

“I want to win. I want to win a game,” Coach Prime said. “You think I really sit down and think about that kind of stuff?”

I don’t know what Coach Prime is thinking, but he must be talking to himself with the way that his Buffs can blow leads and “don’t know how to win games.” Colorado started the year on fire with a 3-0 start and a national ranking before losing five out of the next six games. This includes a game against Stanford where they lost in overtime when they had a 29-0 lead at the half.

People love Coach Prime. They buy his hats, his hoodies, and his sunglasses. But, in reality, what has he accomplished in Boulder?

He totally flipped the roster last spring, ambushed his offensive line after a loss to UCLA and said that they all needed to be replaced, and demoted his offensive coordinator Sean Lewis in his first season while he was guiding a unit that averaged over 502 yards per game.

The fact is that Coach Prime is vastly overrated as a head coach. If I were Ross Bjork, the Athletic Director at Texas A&M, I would not give Coach Prime a second thought. He will draw fans, he will recruit moderately well, and he will raise lots of money. But he is not a very good coach, and money does not translate to wins.

Prime is lucky to be in Boulder, where they have toiled in mediocrity for so long that they were willing to buy into the whole Coach Prime mantra.

As I said before, Prime is a brand, not a head football coach. He would rather concentrate on how much money he brings into Boulder and to the University as opposed to whether Jace Feely or Alexander Mata should be kicking field goals. Prime is his own biggest fan, and he can take his show to any town, just like the circus.

But, as one Pac-12 coach stated so eloquently, Sanders is like the circus. He comes to town, he takes your money, and he leaves. Ask the people at Jackson State about Sanders’ loyalty. Not only did he arrive at Jackson State holding their bag, but he left town for the big bag in Boulder, and he took all of the JSU’s prized superstars with him.

He left the cupboard bare for the new coach.

Prime knows that people hear the whispers that he should jump ship and go to A&M, where he would play in the storied and media-heavy SEC. He just doesn’t want anyone to buy the sizzle when they are looking for the steak.

“I tell them what I told them when they came. “I’m here. I’m here. I tell them my mother is here, my daughter is here, my three sons are here, my other daughter comes to every home game,” Sanders said. “We here. I get mail here. Pay taxes here. I’m here. I don’t hear that. Maybe our recruiting staff hears it, but I don’t hear it. I’m too honest with my parents, and I am going to tell them the truth.”

If Coach Prime is as blessed as he says he is, he will stay in Colorado and focus on being a better head coach. He is a great father but not a very good head football coach. His team shows it every week.

Texas A&M is looking for someone better than Jimbo Fisher to throw a Texas-sized bag to. While Deion might have a ten-gallon hat, he is not going to catch the bag. He says he doesn’t want it, but in reality, he really does not deserve it.
