EA CFB 25 Cover is a Joke

Mike Farrell on how EA Sports missed the mark with their choices for cover athletes

EA Sports College Football 25 is long overdue and should be fun, but the cover is horrible. Only one player of the three belongs on it and many teams were absolutely shafted.

Let’s start with the players before we get to the teams. While RB Donovan Edwards is a solid player and ATH Travis Hunter is fun and all, neither belong on the cover. Edwards had 497 yards rushing last season, a major regression from the year before, and wasn’t a massive factor in the Wolverines’ run to the national title. While Michigan deserves to be recognized, a defensive player like DB Will Johnson or DL Mason Graham would have been a better choice. I know offensive players have more marquee value, but with JJ McCarthy and Blake Corum gone, choosing offense for Michigan was dumb. The defense will be the heart and soul of the team.

Hunter is good and all but the hype is more than the results. He had a solid year last season despite injuries with 721 yards on offense and three picks on defense, but QB Shedeur Sanders would have been a better choice if Colorado was to be represented — and there is no way they should have been. More on that below.

A case can be made for Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers as a returning starter from a playoff team, although his stats are somewhat pedestrian. 22 touchdowns and 3,479 yards is good enough, though, and I have no issue with Texas and Ewers being represented.

As for teams, this isn’t great. While I agree that Michigan deserves to be on there after winning the national title and that Texas should return as a playoff team, there is no way any player from Colorado should be represented. We all pay attention to the Buffs because of Deion Sanders, but they were a dismal 4-8 (1-8) in-conference last season and will be the 4th or 5th best team in the Big 12 this season if all goes well. Is that cover-worthy? Not even close.

If I’m a fan of the following programs, I think we got screwed — Ohio State, Georgia, and Alabama. Where’s FSU? While the Seminoles were one of the biggest stories in college football last season and should be near the top of the ACC again, what the heck could make the cover? Their QB, top RBs, and WRs, as well as most of their best defensive players, are gone. But Ohio State has a ton of elite talent returning and could be represented by RB TreVeyon Henderson or RB Quinshon Judkins. I know there is a small reference to Ohio State and Judkins, but the Buckeyes should be front and center despite the losses to Michigan, as they will once again be a playoff favorite. QB Jalen Milroe was a playoff QB, and Georgia has been the best team in college football over the last five seasons, so QB Carson Beck should have gotten some love.

It’s just a video game I know and isn’t a big deal to many. But to those diehards who will be losing countless hours to the game, an overall better representation would have been nice.
