Fact or Fiction: Behren Morton Shut Down, “GA” Warren Sapp, Kiffin Copying from Saban

Was it smart for TTU to shut down their QB1? Did Prime make a smart decision by bringing in Warren Sapp? And is Lane Kiffin trying to copy Nick Saban’s coaching personnel strategies?

In today’s Fact or Fiction, I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. Shutting down Behren Morton is the right call.

Farrell’s take: FACT

Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire shut down his QB halfway through the spring for two reasons. Morton has had some injury issues, and it’s vital to the offense he is healthy heading into the season he’s very well-versed in the offense while his backups aren’t. This is the spring, so it’s not a big deal, and load management, so to speak, is coming for many schools as the spring will be diminished a bit, and McGuire is ahead of the curve.

2. Warren Sapp is a good hire for Colorado.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

Domestic violence, soliciting prostitution, and so on, Sapp has been a menace to society for years. Despite his amazing college and NFL career and Hall of Fame status, Deion Sanders bringing him on as a GA at Colorado is puzzling. Deion is all about second chances, of course, but he’s also (supposedly) about his players’ best interests, and being around a guy like Sapp could be amazing or could go poorly. This isn’t worth that risk.

3. Lane Kiffin is copying Nick Saban.

Farrell’s take: FACT

Copying Nick Saban is a good idea, and Kiffin is doing so. The latest example is bringing in former NFL coach Joe Judge as an analyst. Saban was famous for rehabbing careers by offering analyst positions, and Kiffin is learning. He’s also hiring a ton of people with ties to his old mentor and modeling his head coaching and leadership after Saban as well. Will that mean Kiffin will be more serious? Nope. But he’s maturing.
