Fact or Fiction: Iowa’s Issues, Badgers as Big Ten West Favorites, Alabama’s Schedule

In today’s Fact or Fiction, I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. The is a cultural issue at Iowa.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

I’ve talked to a lot of people about this. Kirk Ferentz is furious that the university settled a lawsuit for $4 million after being charged with racial discrimination. I’m not saying there wasn’t any merit to the accusations, especially with the reputation of former strength coach Chris Doyle, but the talk of Kirk Ferentz being blind to the issues is blown out of proportion. Iowa has a diverse staff, no recruits or players I’ve talked to feel this is a widespread culture issue and I think Iowa can finally move ahead.

2. Wisconsin should be the favorite in the Big Ten West.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

This is where I double down on Iowa. I hate the offense, and we all know why Brian Ferentz still has a job, but the defense should still be formidable, and I expect an uptick on offense with Cade McNamara and Erick All joining from Michigan. Even if they score five more points a game, they will can win 10 while Wisconsin adjusts to a new coach and new offense.

New Wisconsin head football coach Luke Fickell, right, poses with athletic director Chris McIntosh at a news conference introducing Fickell on Monday, November 28, 2022 at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wis.

3. Alabama gets the worst of the potential annual opponent schedule.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

Nick Saban likes to complain, and a potential draw of Auburn, LSU, and Tennessee isn’t fun, but what does he expect? They play those teams every year anyhow. Saban appears to want a break from such things in a 9 game SEC schedule, and I get that, but Auburn gets screwed here the most. They get Alabama as expected, and Vanderbilt is a nice break, but landing Georgia too? That’s rough.
