In today’s Fact or Fiction, I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.
1. Josh Gattis is a good hire for Maryland.
Farrell’s take: FACT
Gattis has fallen far in the mind of the common fan going from Michigan success to failure in one year at Miami. But let’s be clear — the issues at Miami aren’t all his to own. The lack of skill at wide receiver was evident, players were learning a new system, and Tyler Van Dyke got hurt. Gattis runs a pro-style offense, and, oddly enough, he will have more talent at Maryland than he did at Miami led by Taulia Tagovailoa who is coming off a strong season and a low-key good wide receiver group. Gattis wasn’t as good as we gave him credit for at Michigan because that was a lot of Jim Harbaugh’s offense, but he also wasn’t as bad as we slammed him at Miami.

2. Kirby Smart is the top coach in college football.
Farrell’s take: FICTION
I’ve seen at least one list that has the Georgia coach over Nick Saban, and a case can be made based on back-to-back national titles, but let’s pump the breaks. Nick Saban has won seven national titles, he groomed Kirby as a great coach, and when he misses out in a season, it’s not by much (Alabama loss in title game in 2021). Saban is still the GOAT, but it’s getting closer and closer.

3. Miami is upgrading at Offensive and Defensive Coordinator.
Farrell’s take: FACT
While I defended Gattis above, it’s clear Miami wasn’t a fit for him and Mario Cristobal. And new hire Shannon Dawson is a QBs coach, having done well with Clayton Tune at Houston. On defense, Lance Guidry is a bright young mind who will mix things up a bit more and be less predictable than Kevin Steele was. This is a small youth movement for Miami with both guys, and I like it
