Fact or Fiction: Kirk Campbell as OC, NCAA’s Case, Chip Kelly’s Future

Mike Farrell determines if promoting Kirk Campbell to OC was the right move for Michigan, if the NCAA really has a case against Tennessee and Virginia in their ongoing lawsuit…

In today’s Fact or Fiction, I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. Kirk Campbell is a great hire from within for Michigan as OC.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

He did a very good job with JJ McCarthy as the QB coach last season but he’s less than a year removed from an analyst role and McCarthy was kind of a polished prospect with Sherrone Moore and Jim Harbaugh molding him. For a new head coach, I would have liked a more experienced hire here. I get how important continuity is but they are getting that with Moore already and this is going to be a staff with a few guys taking on huge jumps in responsibility.

SOURCE: Michigan is expected to promote QBs coach Kirk Campbell to offensive coordinator. The 37-year-old has quite a bit of experience as a play caller and is very well-regarded inside the UM program. Here's more on the move: https://t.co/x66XsX94bihttps://t.co/x66XsX94bi

2. The NCAA case is strong enough.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

Not even close. The NCAA is basically imploring the courts to keep the status quo and protect amateurism, and that’s kinda it. That’s their pitch. The states of Tennessee and Virginia have a much stronger case to allow recruits to choose a school based on financial reasons and profit from their name. The justification that this has always been the way it is is beyond lame. They don’t really have a chance in hell with this lame approach.

3. Chip Kelly will last the 2024 season.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

Rumors of Kelly looking to jump to the NFL for a coordinator position, à la Jeff Hafley, are running wild, and even if they aren’t true, he isn’t long for the game. UCLA almost moved on after last season, but that was more of a mutual departure situation from what I’ve been told, and I don’t think he will finish the 2024 season. College football is as hard to manage as it’s ever been, and he didn’t much like managing it more than a decade ago.
