Fact or Fiction: Mel Tucker, Tunnel Antics, and the Blame Game

In Mike Farrell’s Fact or Fiction, he determines if Mel Tucker is on the hot seat at Michigan State, who’s to blame for…

In today’s Fact or Fiction, I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. Mel Tucker is on the hot seat.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

Despite a horrible 3-5 season so far, a 1-4 conference record, a humiliating loss to Michigan and the tunnel scuffling incident, Tucker is in no jeopardy. Why? Because he has that massive guaranteed contract and let’s be real — he’s a season removed from 11 wins. Will this slide continue downhill? I think it will and I was stunned they threw all that guaranteed money at him after one good year and some LSU interest, but this man is the head coach at Michigan State for a long time. I’m not sure if that’s good or bad for Spartans fans.

2. Coaches should be punished for the player melee in the tunnel.

Farrell’s take: FACT

Why? Because that’s the way to stop it. You suspend Tucker or Jim Harbaugh (or both) for the actions of their players and hit them in the wallet you can bet this nonsense will stop. The tunnel situation isn’t a great one at Michigan with everyone exiting the field at once, but this has been the case for a billion years. So two incidents in two games at the Big House is a trend and it needs to stop. Suspending players helps, fining teams helps but it has to be the men in charge that feel this pain. I can tell you that if Tucker or Harbaugh are on top of this situation more, it doesn’t happen.

3. Michigan State players were at fault.

Farrell’s take: FACT

I know they were taunted. I know they just lost a rivalry game in bad, bad fashion. But keep your cool. Everyone is accountable for their physical response to non-physical threat. I said the same about Jermaine Burton last week and I’ll say the same about the Michigan players. If someone jaws at you, jaw back. Or move on. But when it becomes physical then you’ve crossed the line.

After the Michigan Wolverines beat the Michigan State Spartans, 29-7, to reclaim the Paul Bunyan Trophy, players from both teams had a shoving match on the Michigan Stadium field Saturday, October 29, 2022.
