Fact or Fiction: Norvell’s Extension, Charlie Strong’s Departure, Texas’ SEC Chances

In Mike Farrell’s Fact or Fiction, he analyzes whether FSU extended Mike Norvell a year too soon…

In today’s Fact or Fiction, I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. FSU extended Mike Norvell a year too early.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

There are some who think so, as Norvell was 8-13 headed into this season and had his first successful year as head coach going 10-3. His overall record is 18-16, so a huge extension and double his salary may sound crazy. But in this day and age of college football, you extend success or lose them, and FSU is headed in a great direction. If he steps back next season there will be some questions, but for now, it’s the right move.

2. Charlie Strong will be missed by Miami.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

I respect Strong and what he’s done in football, but let’s face it — Miami’s defense wasn’t good last year when he was co-Defensive Coordinator, and some of his recruiting luster has faded. Mario Cristobal wanted to keep him on staff but hiring Lance Guidry was the right move as a small staff overhaul is already needed.

3. Texas is more ready for an early entry to the SEC than Oklahoma.

Farrell’s take: FACT

What a difference a year can make. If you asked me this question when Lincoln Riley was in charge at OU my answer would be obvious — it’s the Sooners. But after an awful first season under Brent Venables and Texas showing signs of life under Steve Sarkisian I’d have to say Texas right now.
