In today’s Fact or Fiction, I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. Paul Chryst is a difference maker for Texas.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

I like Chryst. He’s a solid coach and a nice addition to the Longhorns staff as an offensive analyst. But let’s be real. He’s not known as an offensive guru. And, to me, this isn’t even the recruiting boost the Longhorns got from Gary Patterson’s hire as a defensive analyst. To me, this isn’t a very big deal nor a great addition, as the former Pitt and Wisconsin coach is just getting a pit-stop job from the coaching fraternity.

2. The SEC will move to a 9-game in-conference schedule.

Farrell’s take: FACT

There’s a debate, but the SEC knows that there isn’t a discernible difference when it comes to bowl eligibility in adding the extra conference game. But there is a big difference in strength of schedule perception and national interest in the world’s best college football conference, and a 9-game schedule will keep the SEC at the forefront of the football world. And Greg Sankey is no fool; he’s already angling for new TV money and conference expansion and knows he needs to keep all eyeballs on his conference.

3. The NCAA will eventually handle portal tampering.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

Let’s be real. While Billy Napier and others can say it’s a “cutthroat business” when it comes to tampering, the NCAA won’t do anything. What could they do? Catch one school, just one, and hammer the hell out of them, and it at least slows down. And it wouldn’t be hard as tampering is not only rampant but obvious in many cases. But this is how the NCAA works. They turn a blind eye to things, randomly find one example that isn’t overly egregious and take years to slap the wrist of the school caught. So tamper away everyone — no one is looking.
