Fact or Fiction: Rhule vs. Sanders, Ewers for Heisman, Travis Hunter Hype

In Mike Farrell’s Fact or Fiction, he determines if Matt Rhule was throwing shade at Shedeur Sanders, if Quinn Ewers…

In today’s Fact or Fiction, I look at three big recent topics in college football and decide whether the statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.

1. Matt Rhule indeed threw shade on Deion Sanders.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

I don’t think he did. Rhule mentioned excessive use of the transfer portal this summer as well as a few mentions about how his team works and doesn’t talk and that there won’t be cameras following him around, and everyone assumed it was about Sanders. Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders mentioned how Rhule “disrespected my Pops,” and it was used as motivation by the Buffs. All of that is fine, but Rhule never called out Sanders by name, and I honestly don’t think he’s focused on a non-Big Ten opponent with these comments. Yes, Colorado was opponent No. 2 for Nebraska, and they have a storied rivalry, but it seems odd for Rhule to take shot after shot at Deion. I think he was focused on the state of college football today with a lot of portal use, talking, and cameras everywhere. Maybe I’m naive, but I don’t think he was taking a shot.

2. Texas QB Quinn Ewers should be the Heisman leader.

Farrell’s take: FICTION

It’s still USC QB Caleb Williams to me, followed by FSU QB Jordan Travis and a few others but Ewers is in the discussion after the huge win over Alabama. I’d also throw in Sam Hartman from Notre Dame and Michael Penix Jr. from Washington. And no, I don’t have Shedeur Sanders in the top five.

3. The Travis Hunter hype is out of control.

Farrell’s take: FACT

Hunter is remarkable; let’s make that clear. He’s not only playing both ways, but he’s doing it almost EVERY play, which is unheard of. And rightfully, he’s gaining national attention. But let’s pump the brakes a bit. He’s not a Heisman contender as many want him to be, and Colorado has beaten two terrible teams. But it was this tweet that really pushed me over the edge…

In this clip, Hunter gets pushed back about 10 yards by Nebraska tight end Nate Boerkircher and then commits a personal foul. How is that elite? How is that a “dog”? It’s already come to the point where anything Colorado and Hunter put out there to go viral, and it’s a bit much. The kid is an amazing talent. Let’s just focus on that.
