I begin my Power Five conference predictions with the Big Ten. You’re welcome.

EAST

1. Michigan (playoff)

— This is Harbaugh’s best roster overall and the schedule plays out well. They just need to win against the Buckeyes.

Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh celebrates scoring a two point conversion against Purdue during the second half of the Big Ten Championship game against Purdue at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind., on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2022.

2. Ohio State

— The lone loss to Michigan leads to questions about Ryan Day’s future.

Nov 26, 2022; Columbus, Ohio, USA; Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day yells from the sideline during the first half of the NCAA football game against the Michigan Wolverines at Ohio Stadium.

3. Penn State

— 2024 is the year for Penn State in many ways, but another 10-win season could happen. But the losses will still be to Michigan and Ohio State.

Ohio State

Bigger Playoff, Smaller Stakes: The Decline of College Football’s Regular Season

Nov 12, 2022; University Park, Pennsylvania, USA; Penn State Nittany Lions head coach James Franklin looks to congratulate running back Nicholas Singleton (10) after scoring a touchdown during the first quarter against the Maryland Terrapins at Beaver Stadium.

4. Maryland

— Mike Locksley has done a solid job and I have them losing to Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, and Illinois.

Oct 8, 2022; College Park, Maryland, USA; Maryland Terrapins head coach Mike Locksley stands with his team before taking the field against the Purdue Boilermakers at SECU Stadium.

5. Michigan State

— A bowl game will be tough as this is a rough schedule, and a 5-7 year could easily happen.

Michigan State’s head coach Mel Tucker, right, celebrates with Jarek Broussard after his touchdown against Akron during the third quarter on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022, at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.

6. Rutgers

— 4 wins would be a solid season. That’s where Rutgers football is at.

Nov 26, 2022; Rutgers Scarlet Knights quarterback Gavin Wimsatt (2) throws a pass in the first quarter against the Maryland Terrapins in the first quarter at College Park, Maryland, USA; at SECU Stadium.

7. Indiana

— Tom Allen had a nice run, but this could be his last season. And it shouldn’t be. He’s the right coach for them.

Indiana Head Coach Tom Allen uses his megaphone during Indiana football fall camp at the practice fields on Friday, Aug. 11, 2023.

WEST

1. Wisconsin

— Luke Fickell and the Air Raid will have success early, which is scary, because it usually takes a year or so with roster development.

Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell chats with an official during The Launch, the Badger football team’s intrasquad scrimmage at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wis. on Saturday April 22, 2023.

2. Iowa

— Cade McNamara is a good fit for a bad offense, and the defense will be amazing, as usual.

Iowa quarterback Cade McNamara (12) throws the ball during a spring NCAA football practice, Thursday, March 30, 2023, at the University of Iowa Indoor Practice Facility in Iowa City, Iowa.

3. Illinois

— The defense will be excellent again, and the offense should be improved, despite losing Chase Brown. 7-5 wouldn’t be bad.

Illinois head coach Bret Bielema is shown after their game Saturday, October 1, 2022 at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wis. Illinois beat Wisconsin 34-10.

4. Minnesota

— The Gophers are tough to gauge, and having them fourth is tough, but the schedule has five losses.

Nov 26, 2022; Madison, Wisconsin, USA; Minnesota Golden Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck argues with an official during the game against the Wisconsin Badgers at Camp Randall Stadium.

5. Purdue

— I like Hudson Card, and the offense should be okay, but it will take a couple years for Ryan Walters and the defense.

Purdue Boilermaker quarterback Hudson Card (1) runs a drill during Purdue football practice, Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.

6. Nebraska

— Matt Rhule is the right guy for this team, but 6-6 is the ceiling.

Dec 10, 2022; Lincoln, Nebraska, USA; Nebraska Cornhuskers head football coach Matt Rhule talks to the crowd during halftime of the game against the Purdue Boilermakers in the first half at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

7. Northwestern

— 2-10 would be good for this mess of a program.

Jul 26, 2023; Indianapolis, IN, USA; Northwestern Wildcats interim head coach David Braun speaks to the media during the Big 10 football media day at Lucas Oil Stadium.
