Fault or Fluke: Tyler Van Dyke’s Struggles, Northwestern’s Troubles, Iowa’s Offense

Mike Farrell determines if Tyler Van Dykes issues were just a fluke or if someone is truly to blame

New Wisconsin QB

There are always disappointments in college football. In these circumstances, I take a dive into whether a disappointment (player, coach, team, whatever) is FAULT or FLUKE. You’ll figure it out.

Tyler Van Dyke’s rough season

FAULT

A new offensive coordinator in Josh Gattis and a bad scheme for Van Dyke’s strengths led to a rough season with 10 TDs and five interceptions and a season that brought him from a potential day-two NFL Draft pick to an afterthought nationally. And I blame the coaches and the scheme. The question is — can new OC Shannon Dawson change things and will he be allowed to under Mario Cristobal, who has a penchant for run-heavy and non-imaginative offense.

Northwestern’s horrible season

FLUKE

So I know 1-11 follows a horrible 3-9 season and Pat Fitzgerald is a miserable 4-20 over his past two seasons. And the COVID year could be thrown out a bit as a FLUKE following an awful 3-9 season in 2019. But I have to think another season like 2022 just won’t happen. The ceiling for Northwestern could be 6-6 at best but Fitzgerald is a great coach and until he strings together a few more bad seasons I’ll stick with FLUKE.

Iowa’s anemic offense

FAULT

Brian Ferentz is back right? So the offense won’t improve that much although it honestly can’t be much worse. But this is clearly nepotism and under Kirk Ferentz can fire his son, this will simply be FAULT. We expect Rutgers and perhaps Northwestern to stink every year but Iowa? They will never be a high-flying group but 17.7 points per game is awful and has to be FAULT.
