Lou Holtz and Ryan Day have an interesting history, and with Notre Dame playing Ohio State on Monday night for the National Championship, it was only a matter of time before something new would surface. That time was today, as Holtz decided to take a shot at Day on X:
If Notre Dame doesn’t win, it’s because we want to preserve Ryan Day’s job.
I was originally going to be at the game in spirit, but now I’ll be dragging my body along as well. https://t.co/VF6WOuNzhB

Holtz’s comment was in response to a discussion during today’s “The Pat McAfee Show” regarding the chances that the former Notre Dame head coach would attend Monday night’s game. Despite dealing with a leg injury, it seems as though Holtz has answered the question.
This beef between the two began more than a year ago before the Buckeyes and Irish were preparing to play a regular season game. Holtz questioned Coach Day’s leadership and his ability to prepare the Buckeyes for a big game. Coach Day was quick to respond after Ohio State won 21-17:

It is unlikely that Coach Day will respond to Holtz before Monday’s championship game, but it will be interesting to see how long it takes him to do so if the Buckeyes win. And if the Irish win, expect Holtz to find his way to a microphone as soon as possible. Just some extra drama for Monday night.
