Mind of Mike: Notes From the Road

Mike Farrell goes over five CFB questions from a drive, including if Deion Sanders is a good coach.

1. Is Deion Sanders a good coach?

The answer is of course yes. Many question the hypocritical nature of Sanders and many, like myself, feel he’s overhyped but I hear too often that Coach Prime “sucks” and is a “terrible coach”. And that’s kinda dumb. While winning in high school and with a loaded roster in FCS may not be impressive to some people, it’s still impressive. Deion is a good coach. How good and if he’s good at the Power Four level, we will find out soon enough.

2. Can Quinn Ewers emerge as the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft next season?

This year the NFL Draft QB class is overrated. Next year it just looks awful. Carson Beck or Shedeur Sanders as No. 1 overall? Ouch. It makes me think of the elite arm talent of Ewers and how scouts will fall in love with him if he has a great season. Don’t discount him for a second as the top pick next year.

Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers (3) throws a pass during the game against Alabama at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday, Sep. 9, 2023 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

3. Can Billy Napier survive the year?

I have many theories on how Napier can survive. Shock the world and just go 7-5 with that nasty schedule. Play all young dudes and show the promise of tomorrow during a rough season. But no matter how I spin it, he can’t survive. This team won’t win 7 and even if he ran with DJ Lagway and the younger players, patience won’t be there.

Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier looks on during the first half against the Arkansas Razorbacks at Steve Spurrier Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, FL on Saturday, November 4, 2023.

4. Will Bear Alexander jump in the portal?

Rumors surface that the DT would jump in and then he shot them down. But the big man has played at a new school every season since middle school it seems so he’s no stranger to moving around. If he jumps in there will be zero surprise on this end.

5. Can the Iowa offense get worse?

Nope. It just can’t. There aren’t a ton of weapons and it’s not like they hired Andy Reid to run the offense. But there’s just no way they can get worse. Last year I won so much money on the under in Iowa games and sadly we won’t see those amazing numbers again this year. They might even score more than 20 in half their games, a minor miracle.
