Mind of Mike: Saban, Harbaugh, Napier, and More on the Brain

Mike Farrell on whether the sport of college football will miss Nick Saban or Jim Harbaugh more, if Billy Napier can have a Norvell-ian turnaround…

Five random questions on my mind while driving.

1. Who will we miss more, Saban or Harbaugh?

I’m not sure why this got me thinking but it’s an interesting question. Saban was hated by so many and then became kind of beloved at the end while Harbaugh was odd and eccentric in the beginning and beyond polarizing at the end. Did Saban leave because of NIL? Did Harbaugh leave because of possible NCAA sanctions? I’ll do a deeper dive on this but for me, I’ll miss Harbaugh more.

2. Will JJ McCarthy last the longest in the NFL?

Caleb Williams has the most talent. Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye have high ceilings and Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr. are hit or miss. But to me, McCarthy strikes me as a guy who will be steady — If he’s not a starter he could be a long backup. I think he could be a 12-year NFL dude.

Nov 25, 2023; Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA; Michigan Wolverines quarterback J.J. McCarthy (9) throws during the second half of the NCAA football game against the Ohio State Buckeyes at Michigan Stadium. Ohio State lost 30-24.

3. Reggie Bush was the right USC player to lose his Heisman?

OJ Simpson was acquitted of double murder but c’mon man. Bush took NIL money way before it was legal and all but he’s without his Heisman while a double murderer didn’t lose his? Make it make sense.

Five years after he won the award, Reggie Bush gave up the Heisman after an NCAA investigation.

4. Can Jayden Daniels survive in the NFL?

Daniels took some massive hits in the SEC and that can be looked at in two ways. One, it shows he can handle the physical nature of football despite being slight and hold up to the punishment. On the other hand, it shows he struggles to avoid big hits which could lead to an injury-riddled NFL career.

Nov 11, 2023; Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA; LSU Tigers quarterback Jayden Daniels (5) rushes for a touchdown against Florida Gators safety Jordan Castell (14) during the first half at Tiger Stadium.

5. Can Billy Napier pull a Mike Norvell?

I thought Norvell would struggle in his pivotal season a couple of years ago but he emerged and is now one of the top coaches in the country. Can Napier do the same? The difference is the tough SEC schedule Napier faces this year compared to a weak ACC and I don’t see a way he can pull this off. But I’ve been wrong before.

Sep 16, 2023; Gainesville, Florida, USA; Florida Gators quarterback Graham Mertz (15) and Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier against the Tennessee Volunteers prior to the game at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
