With only one game remaining left in the regular season, the
finalists for the end-of-season rewards have been named. For the
most part, voters got it correct, but there are a few player’s that should
have been finalists without a doubt. Let’s get into it.
1. Maxwell Award (Player of the Year)
QB Cam Ward, Miami
Coming into the season Cam Ward was arguably the best quarterback transfer on the market, and he decided to choose the Hurricanes.
That was the main piece missing for Miami, and he has done
nothing but show up and show out.
Ward has been everything for a
team that is one win away from the ACC championship along with a
CFP appearance. He ranks first in the nation in passing touchdowns
(34) and quarterback rating (87.2). He also ranks second
nationally in passing yards (3,774) to fellow ACC transfer Kyle McCord. Now the finalists were well
deserving, but Ward not being on there is a travesty.
Dillon Gabriel is one of the biggest beneficiaries of preseason hype I’ve ever seen.
How is he a Maxwell Award finalist and Cam Ward isn’t?

Passing TDs: 19th (Cam Ward, 1st)

2. Doak Walker Award (Top RB)
RB Dylan Sampson, Tennessee
Now the top running back all season has been Boise State’s
Ashton Jeanty by a long shot. He has put up video game numbers, in
which we have only seen from some guy named Barry Sanders.
Now he may not reach that, but it’s a reason why he is one of the
Heisman front runners. After him, it has to be Tennessee’s Dylan Sampson.

For
the life of me, I can’t comprehend how he doesn’t get any shine for
being the leading rusher in the SEC at a top-ten team in Tennessee while headed towards the
rushing touchdown record for a single season in the conference. For
the season, Sampson has 1,307 rushing yards with 22 rushing touchdowns
which sits him at third in the country. Any other season he would be
a Heisman finalist, let alone a finalist for the Doak Walker Award.
Do better committee.

3. Jim Thorpe Award (Top DB)
WR/CB Travis Hunter, Colorado
Now here is what I want to know, how can someone be a
finalist for the best defensive player in the entire country (Chuck
Bednarik award), but not a finalist for the best defensive back? That
makes zero sense. Not only has Travis Hunter been the best player in the
nation, given he plays both sides at an elite level, including being a
finalist for the best receiver in the country (Fred Biletnikoff award),
but he literally shuts down one half of the field.
Quarterbacks are
terrified to throw his way, and he still has three interceptions on the
season while making clutch tackles in the run game to even win
games. Oh, he is also the front runner for the Heisman trophy. A
head scratcher indeed.
