Head Coach options to Replace Tim Albin for Ohio include Jason Eck and Deland McCullough

Charlotte made a massive hire by getting Tim Albin from Ohio. In four seasons in Athens, Albin won 10 games in three of them. This year’s MAC championship was his last game in charge of the Bobcats. Ohio may choose to give a young up-and-comer their first head job or give a veteran the reigns, as many G5 schools have. Going back to the Frank Solich years, this has been one of the more consistent and stable G5 jobs. For their sake, I hope they can continue this.

Jason Eck

Idaho, Head Coach

A former MAC assistant at Ball State, Eck has been the Vandals’ boss since 2022. He took over a program that hadn’t had a winning season since 2016 and has taken them to back-to-back playoff appearances, including a quarterfinal trip this past Fall. Eck has FBS experience at Wisconsin, Colorado, Ball State, and Idaho when they were still a member. If he wants to go to the FBS now, he’d be a guy I would look at, since he’s had other interests.

Deland McCullough

Notre Dame, Associate HC/RB Coach

A former MAC player at Miami (OH), he knows the Midwest well. He has been with the Irish for three seasons and before that coached at Indiana, USC, Miami (OH), and with the Kansas City Chiefs. His name is heating up as a G% head coaching candidate, especially in the Midwest and Northeast. He was rumored for multiple G5 head jobs. His star is hot right now and this could be the right time for him to take a head job.

Brian Smith

Ohio, Interim HC/Offensive Coordinator

Smith is in his first year as OC for the Bobcats but his third year as an assistant coach. He will be the interim head coach through the bowl game against CUSA champion Jacksonville State. Considering how well Ohio has done since he’s been there and his previous FBS experience at Hawaii (his alma mater) and Washington State, I think he could be in the running for the job. The longtime Nick Rolovich deputy (and former roommate) is a guy to watch here.

Al Washington

Notre Dame, DL Coach

Washington is a Boston College alumnus and coached at some of the top FBS schools for multiple seasons. He was a hot name for multiple HC jobs last offseason but didn’t get one. Ohio probably wants someone with a background in the Midwest and East. He has coached at Michigan, Ohio State, and Notre Dame in recent years. Washington has tutored many players at both DL and LB over his career who have gone on to the NFL.

Dino Babers

Former Offensive Coordinator, Arizona

Baberswould be a solid hire for a team in the limbo like any lower-level G5 team is. He was deservedly let go at Syracuse, his end-of-season collapses and lack of ability to win conference games were his downfall. However, he was a heck of a coach at Bowling Green, winning 18 games in two seasons. His star is low now, but he has shown the ability to win in the MAC and built teams that have succeeded. If he wants back in and the money is right, he could be a bargain for Ohio.
