Smith came to Ohio State as one of the most anticipated prospects ever. He was rated a five-star recruit and the top ranked prospect of the incoming 2024 college football class. He lived up to all the hype while helping the Buckeyes win the CFP championship. Smith had 76 catches for 1,315 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns. He averaged an astonishing 17.3 yards per catch.

In an interview on the Triple Option podcast with Rob Stone, Meyer talks about Smith, “Well, the best player in the country in maybe the last decade is Jeremiah Smith. He’s the best player. If I had to say it’s only +1200. Arch Manning’s number one at +700 as far as the betting. I’m gonna say Jeremiah Smith’s gonna be the first receiver in a while to win the Heisman Trophy,” Meyer explained.
Travis Hunter did win the Heisman in 2024 as a wide receiver, but he also played cornerback. DeVonta Smith was the last true wide receiver to win in 2020.

It will be interesting to see if Smith can improve on those eye-popping numbers in his sophomore season and take home the Heisman even though the trophy typically goes to a quarterback. 12 of the last 15 Heisman Trophy winners were quarterbacks.
