Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin is no stranger to social media. Overall, it tends to work in his favor, but at times his comments seem awkward and out-of-place. Yesterday, Coach Kiffin decided to comment on a statement made by Arkansas basketball head coach John Calipari following his team’ victory over St. John’s.

Kiffin’s general point is correct. It is absurd that the men’s basketball portal window opens on Monday, during the NCAA tournament, just as it was absurd that the football portal window opened during preparation of the playoffs and bowl season.
However, there is one major difference. Coach Calipari’s team is competing in the NCAA tournament and will be playing in the Sweet 16 on Thursday. Coach Kiffin wasn’t preparing for the expanded playoffs because Ole Miss didn’t earn an invite. The Rebels were preparing for the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl against Duke, which few people outside of Oxford and Durham cared about.

Considering Coach Kiffin spent a great deal of time on social media during the football playoffs taking shots at the selection committee for passing on Ole Miss, he likely also had the time to deal with the portal in December. Especially since he is one of the top portal recruiters in the country.

Coach Calipari, and every coach preparing for Sweet 16 games, have no reasonable time for anything portal related this week. Portal scheduling is a mess for everyone but there are situations that just don’t compare. Coach Kiffin wishes he could be in a situation as important as Coach Calipari’s, but to this point that has yet to happen.
