One quick way to make some quick money in college sports is by selling the naming rights to your stadium and/or field to a company. Penn State is the latest to do so, with today’s announcement.

The Board of Trustees is meeting today to vote on the recommendation of West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium.

“West Shore Field at Beaver Stadium” was confirmed by Penn State’s Board of Trustees this morning, which is part of a 15-year contract that is worth $50 million. If you’re wondering what West Shore actually is, it is West Shore Home, a home remodeling business based out of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. They were happy to announce their new deal.

Coming out to around $3.3 million dollars a year, the early reaction from fans is steering towards disappointment. Some didn’t want to sell the naming rights at all, some believe that it should have been for more money, while others have wanted the field named after Joe Paterno for years. The reality of the situation is that a majority of people will still refer to it as “Beaver Stadium” and nothing else. So, while I do agree that a school like Penn State likely could have found a better deal, it is also a free $3.3 million per year to add to their NIL fund.

As usual, this is just a sign of the times. And if your school’s field hasn’t sold its naming rights yet, don’t think that it won’t be coming soon.
