Radio Show Caller Burns Swinney: Could He Have Been a Plant to Rally His Troops?

Coach’s $11 million salary was called into question. Is he worth it? Some say no.

“Tyler in Spartanburg” made what might have been perceived as an innocuous phone call to Dabo Swinney’s radio show, but what shook from the trees was anything but a run-of-the-mill question for the coach.

Tyler had a question for Coach Swinney. He wanted to know if Swinney was worth his $10 million per year salary. Well, arguments can be made that Clemson is not getting their money’s worth out of Swinney this season. Clemson is 4-4 and has dropped two straight ACC games.

Instead of answering the question like the professional that Swinney is, he challenged the caller and gave Tyler a piece of his mind.

“You’re part of the problem,” Swinney said. “The appreciation, the expectation is greater than the appreciation. That’s the problem.”

Dabo, Dabo, Dabo. That is not the problem. The problem is that your team is not good enough to hang with the big boys this year. Your own quarterback doubted you when he ran an RPO against Miami in double overtime and was sacked on the last play of the game. Clemson had the ball at the one-yard line, and your quarterback did not trust your judgment, and he pulled the ball away from Will Shipley and went rogue.

Swinney continued to justify his and his team’s overall performance this season despite being unjustified in his comments.

The Best Way to End the Scheduling Debate

“Is this a bad year? Yeah, and it’s my responsibility. Take 100 percent responsibility for it,” Swinney said. “But all this bull-crap that you’re thinking, all these narratives that you read. Listen, man, you can have your opinion all you want, and you can apply for the job. And good luck to you.”

Dabo, this is college football. No one wants to know what you did years ago with DeShaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence and the two national titles that you coached Clemson to attain.

This is a TODAY world. It’s what have you done for me lately. Quite Frankly, as Stephen A. Smith used to say, this year, you haven’t done a thing but lose four games while staring at a fifth.

Clemson’s Dabo Swinney went on an epic 5-minute rant tonight after ‘Tyler, from Spartanburg’ asked him about his $11.5 million salary and 4-4 season.

“I’m not gonna sit here and let you, I don’t care how much money I make. You’re not gonna talk to me like I’m 12-years old..” pic.twitter.com/XvjhZDUd2m

If I was Tyler from Spartanburg, I would go directly to the Clemson Athletic Department and put in an application. What that guy asked on the air, before the entire Clemson radio network, took more intestinal fortitude than Cade Klubnik ignoring a call from the sidelines.

According to sources at Clemson, Swinney has not resigned as of yet, and the position is not available. For $10 million a year, don’t think for one minute that Swinney is going anywhere and that Tyler from Spartanburg is getting anywhere near the coaches office.

Swinney continued to go off on Tyler and showed his lack of professionalism on that day, and he proved that he was the smaller man.

“I started as the lowest-paid coach in this business, and I worked my ass off,” Swinney whined. “I’m not going to let this smart-ass kid get on the phone and tell me how to do my job.”

That a boy, Dabo, you tell ’em. Now get your team ready for another whooping when you play No. 12 Notre Dame on Saturday.

Some people on the internet believe that Tyler was a plant by Swinney, so he could go off on the kid and rally his team and fire up the troops. Upon information and belief, it is believed by some in the ACC fanbase that Dabo has been known to allow a reporter to ask about something that he or his team is being chastised for, and then he will use the opportunity to go off on the “plant” to get his team going.

Most of his life, Dabo Swinney has been fueled by doubt. Maybe “Tyler from Spartanburg” is a spark. https://t.co/2IX6aZDgO4

The coach was able, however, to joke about it Tuesday as he gave his weekly press conference, as indicated below by Jon Blau.

Dabo Swinney has arrived.

He wishes everyone a Happy Halloween. Then asks reporters who they are dressing up as.

Phil Kornblut (@sportstalksc) answers "Tyler from Spartanburg."
