During his junior season in Folsom, California, Ryder Lyons threw for 2,874 yards and 44
touchdowns while rushing for 556 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was named 2024 Gatorade
California Football Player of the Year.
“I just think he’s a phenomenal athlete,” his quarterback trainer Danny Hernandez said. “You
take a look at a kid who, he has a basketball background. It’s not that he’s a superstar in the
basketball court or anything, but you do see a guy that’s very athletic. So he’s able to just
create. … He’s just a big-time play maker, and it comes very natural to him too.”
Sacramento State is currently in the FCS and are making a push to move up to the FBS, possibly
the PAC-12. The Hornets hired Brennan Marion away from UNLV. They announced plans for a
new stadium and claim to have $35 million in NIL funds from local businesses, community
leaders, and a local tribe.
According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, USC is the favorite to land the talented QB.
He also has offers from Michigan, Oregon, North Carolina, BYU, and Arizona. He is currently in
the 2026 class, but is likely to go on a mission after graduating and reclassify to the 2027 class.

It is extremely difficult for an FCS school to compete with the big schools for the top talent.
While it is unlikely Ryder Lyons will end up at Sacramento State, it is interesting that the
Hornets even got a visit from a five-star recruit.
