While it is extremely early to be discussing team rankings for the Class of 2026, sometimes you notice something that grabs your attention. That is the current situation with Sacramento State, which is making plenty of recruiting noise with their new head coach Brennan Marion.
To say that Coach Marion has hit the ground running since he was hired on December 20th is putting it mildly. The former UNLV offensive coordinator and first-time head coach immediately made a statement with his aggressive, and successful, approach in the transfer portal. In the span of only a couple of weeks he reeled in what is considered by many to be the top FCS transfer class in the country.
Aside from several UNLV players, who followed Coach Marion to Sacramento, the Hornets also added other important FBS transfers such as RB Rodney Hammond (Pittsburgh), DL Brodie Tagaloa (Nebraska), CB Ricky Lee III (UAB) and QB Cardell Williams (Tulsa). However, Coach Marion’s early work with high school recruiting may be even more impressive. According to 247sports.com, the Hornets currently possess the #46 recruiting class in the country with five three-star commitments.

This puts Sacramento State just ahead of Boise State and Alabama (yes, that Alabama) and other programs like Wisconsin, Virginia Tech, Missouri, Kansas State and Texas Tech. Will the Hornets be able to maintain a ranking in the 40’s? That is highly unlikely, but overall, it shows the potential that Coach Marion has quickly brought to the program.
Sacramento State has not been bashful in recent months regarding their intentions to make a move to the FBS level. Coach Marion has followed that lead with his aggressive approach since his arrival. If he can translate this aggression into wins on the field, it may open more eyes at the FBS level. Suddenly, Sacramento State is on people’s radars.
