Having college athletes play multiple sports isn’t unique but seeing an ACC All-Conference basketball player announce his intentions to play football is worth a mention. Ian Schieffelin of Clemson made that announcement yesterday.

Schieffelin earned All-ACC honors while averaging 12.4 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game on Clemson’s school-record 27-win team. However, he exhausted his eligibility as a basketball player following the 2024/2025 season. Luckily for him, NCAA rules allow him to use another year of eligibility in a different Division I sport.
After speaking with football head coach Dabo Swinney, Schieffelin will be joining the Tigers as a tight end. And while his football playing experience is minimal, at 6-foot-8 and 240-pounds, Schieffelin provides an interesting piece to the Tigers’ offense.
Expectations should be tempered regarding his likely contribution in 2025, but it is a unique opportunity for an athlete who wants to wear his school’s colors for one more year.
