What was a promising football career only a couple of years ago has completely derailed for former Maryland and Marshall defensive back Tayvon Nelson.
The story, released by WSAZ New Channel 3 in West Virginia states that the incident occurred in Huntington, home of Marshall University, on Sunday, which left two people with serious injuries.
Nelson has been charged with first-degree robbery and also suffered a gunshot wound during the incident. According to the criminal complaint, Nelson and his accomplice “showed up to an apartment and pointed guns at the victims before taking drugs from them.”
Also, according to the complaint, “at one point, one of the suspects shot at the victims and one of the victims shot back, hitting Nelson several times. Both of the victims were injured in the exchange of gunfire. One of the victims suffered “a life-altering gunshot wound to the back rendering him paralyzed from the waist to his feet.”
Nelson was a three-star recruit from Staten Island, New York who signed with Maryland in December 2022 over offers from numerous other programs, including Miami, Tennessee, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, Penn State, Ole Miss and Missouri. However, after two seasons with the Terps he entered the transfer portal in December, eventually finding a new home with Marshall in January.
