The best thing for college football? Deion Sanders. But some think he’s the worst thing as well. Here’s your dose of Daily Deion.
Disclaimer: I have always been a fan of Deion Sanders. Loved him as a player at FSU, in Atlanta and Dallas and even respected him as a 49er against my Cowboys.
Deion needs a raise. He currently makes 29.5 million over five years, but Colorado would be very wise to do the following — offer him a guaranteed $200 million over 10 years and make him (by far) the highest-paid coach in our sport. Coach Prime has already saved Colorado from the fate Washington State and Oregon State are headed towards and made the Buffs target No. 1 for the Big 12. That alone is worth hundreds of millions. The media coverage alone has been estimated to be worth $100 million and we are less than a year into his regime. Add in the social media revenue, added enrollment and booster involvement and so on and you have the best hire in the history of college football from a return on investment standpoint. USA Today estimates the total earnings at $280 million for the University of Colorado.
Would Deion agree to such a deal without a reasonable buyout? Probably not and the Buffs would be foolish to throw guaranteed money at him without making it difficult for him to leave but why not try? Without Deion, Colorado football is honestly nothing. That’s harsh but it’s beyond true. Prior to the hire, CU went 1-11 and there was none of this hype, coverage, and attention. If he left tomorrow, all of it would be gone. Lock this man up no matter what it takes. No coach is as vital to their football program as Sanders is to Colorado.
