The Daily Deion: Good Enough Isn’t Good Enough

Deion Sanders didn’t mince words after his team’s underwhelming victory at Arizona State

The best thing for college football? Deion Sanders. But some think he’s the worst thing as well. Here’s your dose of Daily Deion.

Disclaimer: I have always been a fan of Deion Sanders. Loved him as a player at FSU, in Atlanta and Dallas, and even respected him as a 49er against my Cowboys.

I like Deion’s approach here. The win over Arizona State was a good one especially if you consider very few people expected the Buffs to win this game before the season. And any PAC 12 win is a good one, right? But for Deion that’s not good enough — and I love it.

Deion said this after the win…

“Wonderful win, but we played like hot garbage and I’m trying to figure it out,” Sanders said. “I’m sick of this. We’re better than this.”

— Deion Sanders after Colorado beat Arizona State

And he’s right. Arizona State was very depleted and has had so many injuries that any game they win would be a surprise. Arizona State was playing with their fourth QB and were missing three offensive linemen. And the Colorado offensive line, as usual, looked terrible.

This isn’t what Deion expects nor what he will accept and that’s great. He’s actually talking like Nick Saban talks after a win and is a motivational tool for his players. It’s not ingenious as many coaches do it, but I think it’s necessary for the Buffs. They’ve expected to win since the opener against TCU and have to keep the bar set high as they just aren’t deep or talented enough to win any games going away.

The Stanford game up next is a winnable game and he needs to let his team know — if they play down to opponents they will lose and the country will be happy to see it. Deion demanding more all the time is the way to go.
