Today’s topic: Dan Lanning’s pregame speech before the Colorado game. Lanning did nothing wrong. And let’s be clear, Deion never said Lanning did anything wrong. But the outcry that Lanning was out of line saying Colorado was playing for clicks is just dumb. The job of a head coach is to rile up his players in his pre-game speech and Lanning was smart to use the flash of Colorado against them. Why? Because Oregon, even with their flashy uniforms and Phil Knight money, can’t come close to competing with Deion when it comes to celebrity and flash. So why not try to use it against him?
Does Lanning truly believe the Buffs are playing for clicks and not for wins? Of course not. But if he didn’t use that popular online theory against them, he wouldn’t be doing his job. It obviously wasn’t needed to secure a blowout win, but it was smart. And Lanning is no dummy either, he allowed cameras in the locker room for his pre-game speech for a reason. He wants some of that flash as well. But even with the win, he’ll never get close to it. So he’ll have to take shots at Deion and the Buffs like everyone else. And they’d be dumb not to.
