As the final seconds were winding down at Hard Rock Stadium Saturday night, Texas A&M Head Coach Jimbo Fisher’s career at College Station could have also come to an end.
After the 48-33 drubbing by the Miami Hurricanes (2-0), Fisher took another ugly loss under his belt and is one step closer to being terminated as the Aggies head coach.
“Congratulations to Miami,” Fisher said to open his post-game press conference. “Miami did the things they had to do and took advantage of some opportunities in the game”
Some opportunities? Connor Weigman tossed two interceptions and the offense fumbled the ball once. Oh yeah, the Aggies started the game with a 10-0 lead as they blocked a punt after Miami’s first drive.
Fisher has been walking a fine line since last season’s 5-7 record and the rich oil barons that donate to the program are not happy. Could this be the final nail in the former National Championship coaches coffin?
It should be.

Jimbo Fisher with yet another disappointing loss at Texas A&M.
Probably one of the most overrated coaches in college football.
He got paid like a great coach but he simply isn’t one.
He largely rode the coattails of Jameis Winston and then Dalvin Cook at Florida State and left… pic.twitter.com/3Gr5Ye3Vcq

The handwriting should have been on the wall at the end of last season, but Fisher cemented his doom in the offseason by hiring Bobby Petrino as offensive coordinator and play caller. Petrino has been fired more often than he would care to admit and has never won anything. This was a poor decision and showed Fisher’s weakness in being able to select personnel.
Fisher has everything a coach could want. He has a fat contract that makes him one of the highest-paid coaches in America. He signed a ten-year $95 million contract extension in 2021. He has the finest facilities that anyone could ask for and boosters that write large checks at the drop of their ten-gallon hat.
Fisher has recruited top talent to College Station and has signed a lot of five-star players out of high school. After last season he lost a bunch of players to the transfer portal. It might be time for the Aggie Boosters to show Fisher the unemployment line. It might hurt writing the checks for the projected $77 million buyout, but it is time that this herd of cattle is put out to pasture.
At the post-game press conference, Fisher was asked by an Aggie beat writer about the big differences between last year and this year. He asked about the progress that was made in the offseason.
“Our guys fought their tails off,” Fisher said. “We kept coming back.”
Sorry, Jimbo, you led 17-7 in the first half and never made a comeback in the second half. I do not know what game you were watching, but you were not in the game in the second half.
Another big difference is that last year they beat Miami before 102,000 at Kyle Field and this year they lost to the Hurricanes on the road in a stadium that was only half full.
Texas A&M gave up 48 points in a road loss at Miami. Canes QB Van Dyke threw for 5TDs.
Jimbo Fisher has a HUGE buyout. Didn’t the Aggies run off Kevin Sumlin for less? pic.twitter.com/NSfNrkoD9Q— Newy Scruggs (@newyscruggs) September 10, 2023
Notes:
Against Miami, the Aggies defense surrendered 451 yards to the Hurricanes. Tyler Van Dyke threw for 374 yards and five touchdowns. Jacolby George caught five passes for 94 yards and three scores. Xavier Restrepo led the Canes with six grabs for 126 yards.
With less than two minutes left in the game, Miami All-American safety Kam Kinchens was involved in a multi-player collision. He lay on the field motionless for a considerable amount of time before being transported by helicopter to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Trauma Unit.
“So far, the reports that we have on him are that everything seems to be relatively normal,” Miami coach Mario Cristobal said after the game. “I am going to head over there right after I get done with the press conference and see how he is doing.”
