Top Five Offensive Coordinator Candidates for Alabama

Who will replace Bill O’Brien on Nick Saban’s staff?

Hiring an offensive coordinator is a task Saban certainly has had success at. His last 5 are either P5 head coaches or in the NFL. This hire could be very broad as the Tide will have the ability to attract a wide variety of top candidates from the college and NFL ranks. Here are 5 guys who may be in the mix.

Jeff Lebby

Offensive Coordinator, Oklahoma

One of the more well known coordinators in the country, Lebby was in charge of the Sooners this past year. Prior to this he had made stops at Ole Miss, UCF, and Baylor. His teams have been a good mix of run and pass on the field, which will appeal to Saban. Lebby will almost certainly become a head coach in the coming years, so this job could enhance his resume even further. SEC experience and the dynamic numbers his squads have put up will make him a contender here.

Greg Roman

Former Offensive Coordinator, Baltimore Ravens

Roman has been in the NFL since he left Stanford in 2010. He has been the OC in San Francisco, Buffalo, and Baltimore. His time with the Ravens saw Lamar Jackson flourish and if Saban sees Jalen Milroe as the next QB, Roman could be in play. Another guy who will prioritize running the ball, which I see being a prerequisite for any hire, Roman has utilized both RB and QB in his rushing attack. Saban is definitely not afraid to hire an experienced guy who’s career has gone off the tracks, Roman may see this as his rehabilitation stint.

Joe Brady

Quarterbacks Coach, Buffalo Bills

Brady is best remembered for calling the plays for LSU in 2019 and breaking records along the way. No one stood in the way of the Tigers lighting up the scoreboard with the likes of Joe Burrow, Justin Jefferson, Ja’Marr Chase, and many more current NFL players. His time in Carolina did not go well but the inability of the organization to find a QB played a role in that. This past season he was the QB coach for the Bills, mentoring Josh Allen to another top notch season. Brady will definitely get another chance at an elite college OC job if he wants to leave the NFL.

Shea Tierney

Quarterbacks Coach, New York Giants

Tierney may be a lesser known name, but he is known to Saban and worked for him as an analyst before following Brian Daboll to Buffalo and then the Meadowlands. Tierney knows the ways of Saban, Daboll, Chip Kelly, and Doug Pederson. That’s some serious offensive brain power. If Saban wants a flashier name this won’t be the hire, but that’s not his style. He hires big names, but almost always because they’re the best candidate for the job. Tierney could get an interview for this one.

Dan Mullen

Former Heach Coach, Florida

Veteran coach with lots of success, ran out of his last job, career at rock bottom, needs a way back into rehab his name. We’ve heard this one before. Steve Sarkisian, Mike Locksley, Lane Kiffin, Butch Jones, Mario Cristobal, Jim McElwain, and Ron Cooper. All guys who were fired as head coaches, went and worked as an assistant under Saban, and are now college head coaches. Mullen led some of the most prolific offenses in recent memory as Urban Meyer’s offensive coordinator with the Gators. He did a great job as head coach at Mississippi State, then had three solid years at Florida before the wheels fell off in year 4. Mullen is great as a TV analyst now but after the rumors surrounding him and the OC job for Shane Beamer at South Carolina, there might be a chance Dan wants back in the college game. If that’s the case, this job might be too good to pass up.
