In this ever-changing world of college football, head coaches have taken many different approaches on how to handle the transfer portal. Prairie View A&M head coach Tremaine Jackson decided to lay out his “portal understanding” on X yesterday, on the first day of the spring transfer window.

There is plenty to dissect, so here are my thoughts on each of the five rules.
1. This seemed a bit extreme at first, but considering a recruit’s age range and how their cell is always attached to their hand, it is reasonable. Plus, if you’re in the portal, you better be checking your phone constantly or you’re missing the point. With that said, I doubt Coach Jackson has a time clock on each recruit so there is likely a bit of leeway.
2. I guess there isn’t much need for chit-chat. Let’s just get down to business.

3. Reasonable, considering this should be seen as a job interview by the recruit.
4. Very reasonable. Most FCS programs aren’t flush with cash, so while some have more than others, in general it isn’t going to be a money grab for recruits. However, money is always at the forefront of most recruits’ minds, no matter what school they are talking to.
5. Good advice. Portal recruiting generally moves very quickly. This isn’t anything like high school recruiting when relationships are built over months or years. With portal recruiting, you are likely to only have a couple of weeks at the most to choose your next decision. So, have your ducks in a row before you waste your time and the school’s time.
Overall, reasonable advice by Coach Jackson, as he tries to navigate the murky waters of the transfer portal in the coming days and weeks.
