Former North Carolina head coach Mack Brown had plenty to say about Bill Belichick and his upcoming first season in charge of the Tar Heels during an interview on College Sports on SiriusXM. But most interesting were the comments he made about the school lowering its academic standards to help Belichick win.

Brown enjoyed a very successful coaching career before being pushed out by North Carolina at the tail end of the 2024 season. Overall, he went 282-150-1 during his 35 years as a head coach, and 113-79-1 during his 16 years, and two tenures, with North Carolina.

However, his exit did not go over very smoothly, which could explain his eagerness to discuss Coach Belichick and the changes that have taken place since his departure.

“Our last couple years there, we were having to get parents with money, we were trying to get kids over a 3.0 because that’s who we could get,” said Brown. “They’ve committed money to it, they’ve helped him (Belichick) with academics, they’ve lowered those standards some, so there is absolutely no reason that they shouldn’t be successful.”

Brown also made an interesting comment regarding star running back Omarion Hampton, who dealt with plenty of NIL issues which don’t seem to exist any longer in Chapel Hill. The issues were so bad that he said, “I told him he should leave.”

It isn’t as if North Carolina or Coach Belichick needed more publicity, but this interview is sure to get plenty of people talking about what is going in in Chapel Hill.
