While the spring game isn’t comparable to the rigors of the actual season, it does give a glimpse into a player’s potential. For Clemson fans, that glimpse was extremely impressive, as FCS transfer wide receiver Tristan Smith shined on Saturday.

Smith finished the afternoon with five receptions for 137 yards, including the 72-yard touchdown in the video above. The 6-foot-5, 205-pounder, quickly showed everyone that he belongs at the highest level.

He started his collegiate career at Hutchinson CC before transferring to Southeast Missouri State prior to the 2024 season. While Smith’s time with the Redhawks only lasted for 12 games, he excelled with 76 receptions for 934 yards and six touchdowns, which eventually led to his transfer to Clemson.

Smith’s development will need to continue during the off-season, as he is part of a very deep and talented wide receiver group in Clemson. Bryant Wesco Jr., Antonio Williams, Tyler Brown, T.J. Moore and Cole Turner are all thought to have NFL potential, which will make it a constant and consistent battle for reps.

Time will only tell how Smith will do during the 2025 season, but if Saturday was a sign of things to come, then Clemson’s already strong receiving group will be even more explosive than expected.
