WATCH: Notre Dame Winning the Championship is What College Football Needs

Is Notre Dame winning the National Championship the best-case scenario for college football?

With four historic programs remaining in the College Football playoffs, an argument can be made that any of them winning the Championship would be good for the sport. However, one sports radio and television personality believes that Notre Dame would be the best-case scenario.

Chris “Mad Dog” Russo always has an opinion, which is part of his job. Yesterday on First Take, he gave his thoughts on Notre Dame potentially winning the National Championship.

While Notre Dame hasn’t won a National Championship since 1988, an argument can easily be made that this is their best opportunity to win their next. This was solidified after their quarterfinal victory over Georgia, a team whose athleticism and size they weren’t able to match up with in recent years.

However, is it truly the best-case scenario for the sport if the Irish win? Notre Dame will always draw plenty of attention. And when the program is elite, it is better for the sport overall. That part is difficult to argue with.

But with the caliber and prestige of each of the four remaining programs, is one truly a better option than the other three. I don’t believe so, but I do believe that television executives would love to have the Irish in the National Championship game. Whatever the matchup ends up being will produce huge ratings, but any game that Notre Dame is playing brings some extra juice to the ratings.

So while it doesn’t matter for the sport overall, I do think that the television executives will have their Irish pom poms out on tonight.
