WATCH: Shane Beamer is Keeping Transfer Receipts

Shane Beamer shared some thoughts about a player that transferred out of South Carolina last year

Players are constantly coming and going in the current age of the transfer portal. While the outgoing are hardly ever discussed by head coaches, on Monday South Carolina’s Shane Beamer proved that at least some are keeping receipts of the players who decided to leave.

During his weekly press conference, Coach Beamer brought up a player who spoke with him at the end of last season. As you can hear below, the player said that his decision to transfer out was because South Carolina didn’t have a good quarterback on their roster:

Coach Beamer didn’t specifically mention a player’s name, but everyone in Columbia believes that he is referring to wide receiver Juice Wells, who spent two seasons with the Gamecocks. After an impressive 2022 season and an injury-plagued 2023 season, he decided to transfer to Ole Miss.

The development of South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers is what spurred on these comments by Coach Beamer, especially after he had his best game of the season against Missouri with 353 yards and five touchdowns. While Sellers has shown consistent improvement this season, Wells has totaled 26 receptions for 496 yards and five touchdowns with the Rebels.

Overall, this is a situation that worked out for both sides. South Carolina is having a surprising 7-3 season, Sellers has showcased his potential and young receivers like Nyck Harbor and Mazeo Bennett Jr. have had more opportunities to shine. For Wells, while his production isn’t at the level it was with the Gamecocks in 2022, he is still having a solid season, and the Rebels are in position to make the playoffs.

This conversation is just one example of countless others that have happened and will be going on all over the country in the coming weeks with the transfer portal window about to open in early December. Most will never be known publicly, but thanks to Coach Beamer everyone has a hint of what happens behind closed doors.
