Which Teams Need to Win Now?

Ohio State, Texas A&M, and other programs that need to put up or shut up

Ohio State HC Ryan Day.

It’s time for the rubber to meet the road. It’s time to crap or get off the pot. Or how about put up or shut up? Whatever phrase you want to use these teams need to do it on the field.

1. Ohio State

— Week one wasn’t a thriller on offense, and Ryan Day is under scrutiny for the back-to-back losses to Michigan. Now he HAS to go 11-0 first, then beat Michigan, then win the Big Ten title game, and then win the national title. This is a massive year.

2. Texas A&M

— An easy win in week one is fine, but Jimbo Fisher better beat Miami this weekend and keep this team on track. The minimum they need to hit this season is 8 wins, but even that’s not a great year. It’s time for the $100 million man to actually do something.

3. Penn State

— This is the best team at Penn State that James Franklin has had, and a nice win over West Virginia shows Drew Allar could be for real. But he HAS to beat Ohio State and Michigan – or at least one – this year, or fans will continue to be disappointed.

Penn State quarterback Drew Allar gets a pass off with West Virginia pressure closing in on him during the season opener at Beaver Stadium September 2, 2023, in State College.

4. Texas

— Alabama this weekend is the start of it all for Steve Sarkisian, as this is a must-win year. He’s either going to be a serious hot-seat candidate, or he’s going to be a $100 million coach. But he must win the Big 12 title for the latter to happen.

Sep 10, 2022; Austin, Texas, USA; Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian talks with Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban before the game at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

5. Florida State

So far, so good. LSU got throttled, Clemson looks awful, and now FSU is expected to run away with the ACC. Suddenly, the expectations for Mike Norvell are playoff or bust, aren’t they?

Sep 3, 2023; Orlando, Florida, USA; Florida State Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell is excited during the fourth quarter against the Louisiana State Tigers at Camping World Stadium.
