There were shots fired at the University of Miami (FL) on Friday afternoon.

No one was hurt, but Miami (OH) quarterback Brett Gabbert, sitting in Oxford, Ohio, at a routine press conference, launched missiles directed at the five-time national champions and said that he was looking forward to the Friday night matchup with the Hurricanes so the RedHawks could prove to the country, who the “real” Miami is.

Gabbert, a fifth-year senior with 30 starts under his belt, was asked at the press conference in advance of the game if the squad was looking forward to coming to South Florida to take on the Hurricanes. A beat reporter followed up with whether or not the RedHawks would be able to compete and defeat the Hurricanes and show that they are the better team.

“Oh yeah, that’s gonna be awesome,” Gabbert said. “That will be fun. We will show them September 1.”

Miami (OH) is not even in Miami, Ohio. There is no Miami, Ohio, on the map. The school is in Oxford.

However, Gabbert did give the Hurricanes some credit for their talent on both sides of the ball.

“They’re gonna be a very talented team, that’s obvious,” Gabbert said. “But I think we’re going to be able to scheme some stuff up, and I think it will be a good game.”

Gabbert closed the press conference with, “We’ll show them.”

The battle is on.

The RedHawks, famous for being the “Cradle of Coaches”, do not match the rich history of the Miami Hurricanes. Aside from the Canes’ five national titles, they are also a perfect 3-0 against the RedHawks.

The Canes are a 16.5 point favorite at home and have significantly upgraded the 5-7 team of a year ago that lost to Middle Tennessee 45-31 on their home turf.

Gabbert’s opposing signal caller, Tyler Van Dyke has been limited in practice last week due to a ring finger injury that he sustained in a non-contact play two weeks ago. However, he is expected to start against the RedHawks. Van Dyke missed most of last season, as did Gabbert, with a shoulder injury.

NOTE: Miami obtained a commitment on Saturday afternoon from Zaquan Patterson, a five-star safety from Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna.

“I love what Coach (Mario) Cristobal is doing with the program and the direction he’s taking it in, and I want to be a part of that change.” Patterson said on ESPN.
